Day Soldiers eBook Brandon Hale

This is not just a page turner. It's a great book.

I will probably read it again because it got so good at some points that I read quickly just to see what was coming.

But on an objective note, the characters are great. Well constructed and believable. There are good guys, bad guys, surprises as to who's good and who's bad and, most importantly for me, at least, a fantastic villain. The situations are well set up and very believable. An absolute delight.

There is enough description of the surroundings to know where they are and to make it all feel right.

Can't wait to read it again and to read more from this author.

Bravo!

Day Soldiers eBook Brandon Hale Reviews

One critical reviewer is correct about one thing, the book should be classified as YA. However, I have noticed that categories make it difficult to list things exactly the way you want to. YA can be any genre, and needs to be broken down into age range as well. (This isn't for 8th grade Harry Potter fans.)

That said, I gave it 5 stars because I am absolutely blown away by how much fun it was to read. I try to be unpretentious in that way, simply judging a book on how enjoyable it is to read. And unpretentious writing appeals to me a great deal, as long as the story is engaging. Books that are just plain fun to read are actually pretty tough to find. So I'm glad I found these.

One of my favorite aspects of this book is it's originality. It doesn't try to cash in on the (now aging) vampire love meme. It presents a unique story world that I found fascinating. The teen dynamics of a hopeless crush, etc, were very well handled. It casts the hero into a much more noble light as well, which was a good use of that dynamic. This girl is impulsive, unpredictable, passionate, and larger than life. That's kind of what a hero is supposed to be. But she's also very sympathetic, in part because nearly everyone (of every age) can remember the difficulty of being on either side of teen crush.

Someone judging this book by the standards of a techno-thriller is misguided. The Day Soldiers are not presented as an extension of the traditional military, but a full-fledged replacement of it.

I am frankly shocked that a book like this is not consistently in the top 100, especially considering that such straining, cliche'd books as the Atlantis series are up there. (Not trying to diss anyone, but seriously.)

I think you may have a marketing problem, Brandon. Have you considered making these exclusive to for a while, to get in on the Prime readings (at least for some of them), and possibly move them up the charts? Once visible on the charts, I would think these would get a lot more popular. Also, changing them to YA seems like a very important move. As long as there is a way to make it clear they are for older kids. A lot of adults like YA as well. Nearly every parent I know has read and enjoyed a decent amount of YA. Just trying to figure out a way to help. These books deserve significantly more sales.
More for preteens. While the plot was different, it just seemed to be to simple for my taste.
My issues- the new "military" is kind of simple. Bunch of kids all left to do their own thing.
Covert sneaky comando's, all kids. They talk 24/7 while sneaking around in cities full of big monsters.
Lack of danger. Never felt like any characters were ever in real danger. Just witty jokes, flashy fights, and lots of monsters.
The main characters are all kids and the heads of the military think every idea/thing they do is brilliant.

I will recommend this book for young adults or preteens, but for me i need more substance and reality(as much as possible when werewolves and vampires are involved).
Clean language, no gore, nothing scary. Good for young adults not for readers looking for something like koontz or king.
First thing first is that many of the negative reviews are, technically at least, accurate. Characters are not developed at all. Plot is predictable. Action is "over the top" especially in terms of numbers. The timeframes for travel and some of the larger aspects of the war are completely off.

I do have a hard time though getting upset about things like combat and travel not being "realistic" enough in a book about vampires and werewolves. This is no Patrick Rothfuss endeavor where you need to make mental notes to yourself as things happen just to make sure you keep up with the plot. It is, from a technical perspective, very bare bones. Which makes for something you can attack in pieces when you have a few minutes, or are tired or drank a bit and you don't have to worry about forgetting anything important.

All in all the book is entertaining light reading. I'll probably be grabbing the rest as time goes on for times when I want something to read when I don't want to have to put too much "effort" into it. I think maybe a good comparison would be that this is light TV entertainment rather than a long involved drama like Sopranos or Walking dead. It's quite good for what it is.

As an aside, I enjoyed "The Man from Newella" by the same author for much the same reasons, it reminded me a lot of reading the Solomon Kane stories.
This is not just a page turner. It's a great book.

I will probably read it again because it got so good at some points that I read quickly just to see what was coming.
