A duke’s daughter isn’t supposed to court scandal in Regency England. She isn’t supposed to involve herself in controversial causes. And she most especially isn’t supposed to expect love in a ton marriage. But Lady Elizabeth isn’t just any duke’s daughter. She’s a Kellington. And her expectations are somewhat higher than most people’s.

Marcus Redmond, the Marquess of Riverton, has been in love with his best friend’s sister for years. When Lizzie’s reputation is damaged, he offers her marriage, hoping she will come to care for him eventually. But can the upright, staid Riverton make a love match with the impulsive, passionate Lizzie – especially when there are those who are determined to come between them?

NEVER MISS A CHANCE is a sizzling romance with a touch of humor. It contains adult situations and sexually explicit language. It’s the second book in the Kellington series about the Duke of Lynwood and his four siblings. The series started with NEVER A MISTRESS, NO LONGER A MAID.

I read the first book in the Kellington series, "Never a Mistress, No Longer a Maid." That book was absolutely phenomenal, and after reading it I had every intention of reading the other books in the series. However, I was so emotionally invested in Ned and Jane's story (the h and H of book one) that I knew I'd have to wait a while before reading this one, in order to give the h and H of this book a fair chance. I so loved Ned and Jane that I felt sure my love for them would overshadow my interest in Lizzie and Marcus (the h and H of this book.) As it is, Ned and Jane, with their adorable daughter Vi, do make a cursory appearance in this book, for which I was grateful (it gave me a chance to see them happy in lives together some months after their HEA.) However, I was able to greet them as old friends, instead of as an obsessed stalker eager for any glimpse of their current lives. LOL In any event, this book tells little sister, Elizabeth's story. Lizzie is the youngest of the five Kellington siblings, and the only girl. She is extremely opinionated and strong willed, a worthy opponent for her equally strong willed brothers. Lizzie is passionate about women's rights. To promote her cause, she publishes a treatise advocating for those rights, using her real name! Once the treatise becomes public all hell breaks loose, and Lizzie finds herself persona non grata in the ton. Big brother, Liam, Duke of Lynwood, decides that the best possible way to salvage Lizzie's reputation is to get her married...quickly. Enter our hero, Marcus, Marquess of Riverton, and Lynwood's best friend. Marcus has been secretly in love with Lizzie for years, but as his best friends baby sister, she has always been forbidden fruit. It doesn't help that there is a nine year age difference between the two, so from Marcus' perspective, Lizzie is "just a child." To mask his feelings, Marcus is ever proper and a bit aloof around Lizzie, she in turn thinks he's a bit of a stuffed shirt. Thus, when he makes an offer for her hand in marriage, Lizzie is not at all convinced that they will suit. She is determined to delve beneath his surface to discover the passionate man underneath, assuming there is one. From there the story develops. Intrigue is added to the plot in the form of Marcus' devious sisters who are determined to see his betrothal to Lizzie broken. With the aid of an impoverished peer, who is determined to win Lizzie's hand for himself, a plot is devised and steps taken to separate the engaged couple. I absolutely loved this book. It is eloquently written, with an engaging plot, and dynamic characters...just as in the first book. However, it's not quite as emotive as book one. Furthermore, although Lizzie and Marcus are very sweet together, IMO, the romance between them is a bit rushed. I would have liked to see the two of them spend more meaningful time together...I felt like I'd missed something when the two confess their love to each other (well, when Lizzie confessed her love; Marcus had loved Lizzie from the very beginning.) Moreover, the romance does get a bit overshadowed by the other events occurring in the story; it seemed more a story about the Kellington family, than about Lizzie and Marcus. This is especially true when we meet Ms. Rennard, a young woman with whom brother Arthur becomes fascinated, and who, apparently, will be his love interest in the third book. Despite these drawbacks, this book makes for delightful reading. It doesn't quite rise to the standard of the first book, in this reader's humble opinion, but then Ms. Driscoll did set the bar at an extremely high level with "Never a Mistress." Bottom line, I loved this book and I highly recommend it. BTW this is not a clean romance. There are a few love scenes and some explicit language is used. Happy reading.

Never Miss a Chance Kellington Book 2 edition by Maureen Driscoll Romance eBooks Reviews

I'm not going to go into incredible detail here, but I will say that this book was a delightful follow up to the first Kellington story.

The writing moves along nicely, the characters are well developed and the story is quite enjoyable. I read primarily historical romance, and would rate this up there with Alissa Johnson, Julia Quinn and Christina Dodd...

**no spoilers**

Marcus loves Lizzie, but she is off limits as the sister of his best friend... After virtually ruining her reputation with her scandalous writings about freedom for women (not giving anything away that isn't in the first chapter here...) Lizzie has few options open... except marriage to someone eminently respectable and above reproach.

Add to the mix a rather obnoxious parent and sisters, and some underhanded manipulation and you have a rather bumpy road to love... But love it is...

The dialogue is witty and the love story is well conceived. I am really looking forward to the next Kellington sibling's story...
Never Miss a Chance is one of those romance novels that is easily forgettable except for the rather annoying heroine. Heroine Lizzie lacks insight and always seems surprised that her actions have consequences.

Lizzie publishes a treatise about women’s rights and seems genuinely surprised that members of the ton are not happy with her. She forgets that she lives in the 19th century. Her brothers decide she needs to make a match but who will have her? Family friend, Marcus Redmond, Marquess of Riverton, says he will marry her. Marcus has always been in love with Lizzie. She apparently was unaware of his feelings. Lizzie agrees but she is totally unsure of Marcus, is he doing it out of duty or love?

I many times cannot fathom this duty or love trope since the heroine is usually in love with the hero but cannot sense how much he is I love with her. Marcus is honorable, kind and will remain faithful but still Lizzie is unsure. She seems uncertain throughout this whole novel. She also puts Marcus to the test a lot when it comes to their relationship. She cannot even see that they have chemistry. Poor Marcus, being engaged to Lizzie is a series of trials. I just did not find this couple’s story compelling.
My biggest sadness in regard to this book is that we didn't get an introduction to Riverton in the first book, so his presence seems to pop up suddenly. I really enjoyed Lizzie, and her scandalous publications. Perhaps there are aspects of the story that are not necessarily true to the time period (e.g., an innocent duke's sister was probably not likely to attempt to seduce a man she was interested in marrying to see if he was any good), but it was enjoyable nonetheless. Ms. Driscoll writes well, though her repeated use of certain words began to grate by the second book (I do not like the word "chit.") I liked seeing the further development of the Kellington family members, and especially appreciated seeing Ned, Jane, and Violet again. In so many series I've read, previous books' characters might be just mentioned, or have a superficial scene, but Ms. Driscoll includes characters from the previous book in meaningful ways (and continues to do so through the series).

Despite the sex being not quite the thing for the regency era, it was really hot, and different from the scenes of the first book. It's nice to read about men in historical romances who take the time to arouse their lady partners, and get them off first before they orgasm. I also appreciate the attention to contraception. The discussions about sexuality, women's issues, and the state of the aristocracy are all refreshing departures from other traditional romance novels.
