Wishtree adult edition Katherine Applegate 9781250306869 Books Reviews
Wishtree is an amazing book. It's short, easy to read, and draws you in from the first page. I think I loved everything about this book. The writing is lyrical, the illustrations are beautiful and detailed, and the story? Well, it'll touch your heart.
We start with a talking tree. It's over 200 years old, and it's seen a lot in its lifetime. It also holds a few secrets that only a few know about. It has friends in the crow, the possums, the raccoons, and the owls who live in his hollows, and it's had these and other critter friends for centuries. The tree serves as a place for people to congregate on the first days of May as they tie wishes they hope will come true to the tree's branches. One day, not in May, a new young girl who has recently moved into the neighborhood ties her wish to the tree; she wants a friend. The tree is determined that her wish will come true, and with its friends the animals, they do their best to help it happen.
This book touches on many delicate topics, things like friendship, hope, prejudice, hatred, and acceptance. It does it in a wonderfully gentle and sensitive manner. There's no beating you over the head to convince you to accept the opinions in the book. It's a story about a tree, about two children, and the history of the neighborhood. It's lovely and sweet.
This is the adult version of a chapter book for children, but as an adult, I enjoyed every word, every picture, the entire concept. The copy I received has exquisite deckle-edged pages, the paper is creamy and heavy; it will stand up to many readings. And as I said above, the illustrations are exquisite.
I haven’t read any other books by this author, but I think I’ll be searching them out in the future.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I’m so happy I did. I can’t recommend this book enough, to children and adults. Perhaps if more people read books like this, we as a world would all get along better.
