I have become a big fan of the Sister Fidelma mysteries. This one is very well done, has an intricate and suspenseful plot, and like a great detective novel should do, transports the reader into a world created with wonderful care, detail and embellishment. Sister Fidelma is a fascinating character that is very well developed, very human and very appealing. These novels also transports us into a very special world that has been hidden from us by our very inadequate education in history and culture - the Dark Ages were not so very dark to begin with and the Ireland of this age experienced one of the most enlightened periods of mankind.

All I can say is ... in order to get the most out of this remarkable series, you need to read them in order. You can find the list of the order online under the author and Sister Fidelma series. The author combines medieval Irish history with mystery. This series has grown to become one where I want to read more and more.
Sister Fidelma, excellent historical novel.
Fidelma 3 takes an ancient archetype and works it into a plot as intricate as a Celtic knot. Fascinating to see how it was tied and then untied. Of course it addresses the question, can Sister do this without Brother, and double plays that question /answer. Looking forward to Fidelma 4!
These Sister Fidelma mysteries are wonderfully crafted. It may be a bit difficult to read and pronounce some of the ancient Irish names and places, but don't let that hang you up. "Suffer Little Children" author Peter Tremayne weaves an intricate plot and those who enjoy a good "whodunit" will take pleasure in the twists and turns of his story of this brilliant nun. The characters are well rounded and he uses vivid imagery to describe the various locations in ancient Ireland. His "courtroom" scene at the end the book brings all of the suspects together beautifully, before Sister Fidelma reveals the motives and the murderer. Those who have read Ellis Peters series on Brother Cafael will be thoroughly transported to another historical era of mystery enjoyment.
This is the third in the Sister Fidelma mysteries by Peter Tremayne. Knowing some of her background from the first two books would be helpful, but not necessary, to enjoy the story. I did notice a lot of typos in the edition. I am not sure why that happened, and sometimes it is a little distracting. But the read overall is engaging. In this one I did have most of the answers ahead of the reveal, but there was one big surprise at the end that I had not anticipated.
I am thoroughly enjoying being immersed in the 7th century with Sister Fidelma. It's astonishing how "modern" the laws of Ireland were then, and distressing how far Western law fell once Roman ecclesiastical laws were embraced. Love that women were allowed to be strong, intelligent, and respected. Saddened that we still have a ways to go, 14 centuries later, to return to that ideal.
The third book see Sister Fidelma back in her home kingdom doing a favor for her brother the new king. An important scholar has been killed in the kingdom in an abbey run by a cousin of the ruling family. A client kingdom is demanded as an honor price by the man's relative, another king. The situation could blow up into war if Fidelma can't find out what happened. Brother Eadulf is still in Rome so Fidelma is working with a bodyguard but not a real sounding board. I might not have noticed it so much if there wasn't many times where Fidelma found herself longing for him.
