Preacher Book One eBook Garth Ennis Steve Dillon
I was wary to pick up preacher because of the premise and hearing that people were upset by how anti-Christian it was. I'm Christian but I'm not easily offended or anything. I love Crossed and had read the one arc by Ennis with the Englishman, Irishman, etc. That didn't offend me but it was annoying how preachy it was with atheism. I was worried preacher would be an entire series like that but I was pleasantly surprised! After reading the first book I think anyone wary like I was doesn't need to worry, assuming you're not easily offended. It's funny, twisted, and dark with good characters and a good/evil or heaven/hell theme. Great story too, I couldn't put it down. I also was pleasantly surprised by the art work! I know this came out a while back so I was worried it would be that old style comic art that comes on the newspaper style paper (like old Hellblazer). The art is great and pretty modern looking, the book itself is nice quality with gloss paper. Holds up to any modern trade paperback. I tore through the first book in 2 sittings and already have book 2 ordered. Unless the series takes a turn and becomes one long atheist sermon, I don't see what the big fuss was about. I'm glad I gave it a shot and can't wait to see how the show holds up!

Preacher Book One eBook Garth Ennis Steve Dillon Reviews
I've read thousands of comics in my life, and I can honestly say that this is among the greatest. Not since the sandman has a comic made me think and feel so much. The story is fantastic, and the art has a sickly sweet nature that mixes the imaginary with the realistic. For all of those who look at comics as a childish medium, this book will truly make you rethink your stance and give one bell of a ride along the way.
I was first introduced to this series by the new AMC series Preacher and I was hooked instantly and had to find the comics/graphic novels. I tore through this first book in less than a week. Im half way through the second book! I can't wait to read the rest! Thank you for making it so easy to by these and have them at my fingertips)
I've collected/read comics for over almost 40 years, just re-read this series in anticipation of the AMC TV show. One of the best comic books ever written (definitely my personal favorite). Garth Ennis tells such a gripping, unrepentant, unapologetic tale of love, friendship, what it means to be a man in America, dysfunctional families, and why God needs to own up to His creations. LOL.
And the Saint of Killers is one of my favorite comic book characters of all time.
I read the series as it was first released and it always blew me away. With the recent TV series which by the way I never ever thought could happen I figured I reread it. A lot of times when I go back and re-read something that I had read 20 years ago it does not have the same impact, not SO with Preacher.
For those of you that Have only seen the show, you might think that series is crazy as hell but you ain’t seen nothing yet.
Preacher is a great read, but there’s a lot of disturbing content. It is not for the easily offended, and it will likely be very difficult/triggering for anyone who has survived kidnapping/torture/abuse. If Book One were to be rated by the MPAA, I think they’d have a very hard time determining whether it should be “R” or “NC-17” (I think it would end up as “R” but just barely)
That said, most of the disturbing content actually adds to character development and exposition (it’s not just there for shock value, it explains certain characters’ attitudes and ways of thinking), and the series is excellent. I highly recommend it to anyone who is into comic books and mature enough to handle the disturbing content and not be too offended by the religion aspect of it.
This review is for the whole series and this 6 book format. The story is absolutely amazing and brilliantly crazy. Anyone who reads it should love love it as long as you're not overly sensitive concerning religion. Also it's different from the new series on AMC, so don't think you know what the books entail completely. As for the 6 book format in paperback, they are the best bang for your buck compared to the old 9 volume editions and certainly the hardcover or the Absolute editions which are way overpriced. Just enjoy reading and keep an open mind.
Garth Ennis' gonzo Southern Gothic story feels different 20 years out, but it still feels transgressive as an adult like it did when I was find individual issues in my teens. Ennis' transgression is hyperbolic and feels like the work of a young writer trying to figure out exactly the limits of what he could get away with. Yet there is a lot of real, raw genius here and the character of Jesse and madcap world he lives in still works. It does seem like Ennis is throwing everything and the kitchen sink to the concepts in this comic, but I get the feeling it solidifies as the comic progresses.
