I just finished reading this book and then find out it is the author's debut novel. I had to read it in one sitting because it was so good. I laughed and I cried a lot. A story about a teenage boy living with his horrible uncle but the kindly neighbor became a savior to this young man. A lot of horrible things happened in his life but the kindness of people and his determination to succeed overcame all the bad. This is a magnificent story beautifully told.

A beautifully-written and moving coming-of-age debut novel, “Hope for Garbage,” by Alex Tully, tells the story of Trevor McNulty, a 17-year old living a hardscrabble life in one of Cleveland’s blue collar neighborhoods. Trevor lives with his uncle after a family tragedy, and doesn’t have a lot in his life beyond his mutt, Jip, and the unusual friendship he’s developed with his 70-something neighbor, Tom. All that changes, though, when he meets Bea Stewart while he is garbage picking early one morning in Harbor Village. Harbor Village is a push suburb only a few miles outside of Cleveland, but it is worlds apart from Trevor’s neighborhood, and Bea, a privileged student at an all-girls school, is like no one Trevor had known. Although I’m not normally a fan of teenage realistic fiction, I really enjoyed Trevor’s story. The memorable descriptions, and Tully’s ability to capture all the small details of Westwood, resonated with me and stayed with me after I finished “Hope for Garbage.” I read the entire novel in fewer than 48 hours, and I was glad that Alex Tully didn’t go with a pat, predictable ending. Very good novel by a new author, and highly recommended for older middle schoolers, teens, and adults.
I bought this book for my teenage grandson to give him something contemporary to read instead of the classics he’s required to read. I’m hoping he will enjoy reading as much as I do, so I provide a wide variety of books. The protagonist is a 17-year-old-boy I thought he might identify with. After reading it myself, I think parts may be too dark and disturbing for him, although, probably less so than some of the movies he’s seen, games he plays, etc.

It is about reality and about subjects that all too often are parts of life for some children. There are bad actors and sick, flawed people in this book, but there are also good people and deep friendships. There has been damage to this brave, strong boy. But he keeps going. The author makes the reader care very much what happens to him.

There’s a happy and hopeful ending. I knew that in advance from reviews or I may not have been able to finish. It was incredibly sad in places.

Alex Tully has another book out, and I will read it, too. She’s a good writer and once I got to the middle, I couldn’t get anything done because I wanted to keep reading.

It does show counseling/therapy to be helpful and I think that’s an important message for young people, who are the most likely readers of this type literature.

There were a few mistakes in the book - but not so many as to distract from the story. Conscience for consciousness was one I noticed, and a few misplaced or repeated words probably due to incomplete editing.

Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to a friend or to a teenager over 16, though probably not to either who was depressed.
At 17, Trevor McNulty has been through a lot. The only things Trevor has going for him are his elderly neighbor Mr. T, who's his best friend; and The Box, the garage that he's made into a workshop for repairing all kinds of discarded items he finds while garbage picking.

Yet there are countless obstacles standing in the way of their even being friends - including Bea's mentally unstable mother.

While the above description would have you think you know how the story will progress and eventually end, you definitely don't! Tully is a talented writer who manages to create unique situations and deftly turn the story in unexpected ways.
I thoroughly enjoyed Hope for Garbage by Alex Tully. This novel is refreshing, uplifting and demonstrates that good things can and do happen to good people. Trevor, just 17 years old, is beyond his years. The author captured Trevor's endurance and sensitivity and captivated me for the entire book. I started the book on a perfect rainy day and couldn't put it down. I was actually sad when it ended as I could have gone on and on. I hope there is a sequel soon!
Trevor hasn't had the greatest start in life, his only comfort being his 70-year-old neighbour, Mr T, who also happens to be his best friend, and the box (his garage where he restores people's trash). Trevor is a kid with a passion, seeking solace from his tumultous life. This book sounded like just the thing I needed to revitalise my passion for reading. Unfortunately, it wasn't the book for me.

I tried my hardest to love this book (giving it three attempts), but in the end, it just wasn't meant to be. I was so disappointed with the story that I gave up and refused to finish it. Honestly, the only characters I liked were Trevor and Mr T. This story should have been told solely from Trevor's POV. It would have made more of an impact on me. I have to say, while the author touched on a lot of relevant topics, I thought the content was too intense for teenagers at times.
