First for full transparency, I didn’t buy this book from Amazon.
If this book had been written by a newbie author I would have more than likely given it a generous two stars, and encourage them to learn to hone their writing craft. Despite me being bored in places while reading, I think a newbie author would learn to hone their craft, after this first book.

Alas this book was written by a New York Times author who should know better, so this book by Ward gets a one star. Here is the reasons. Yes Ward’s devoted readers will take umbrage with this review, but you’ll all know in your heart of hearts; what I say is simply true. I have been reading Ward for many years, when Black Dagger Brotherhood were paperbacks, this is not her best effort.

First, I felt as if I was playing catch-up in the relationship between Danny and Anne. They were already in love when the book opens. Geez so much for a firefighter romance. YES, I know to novella were released, and they greatly impacted this book’s plot/romance. The book is sold as the first in a new series which it is not. The novellas need to be read.

Second, no one in real life talks or uses nicknames for real life items. It is a coffee not a Dunkins. We humans use item names in the lexicon of our real life. In Ward’s Black Dagger Brotherhood this type of speech pattern works as they are another freaking species, in this book it is just lame.

Third, Ward seems to hate woman. Anne is a highly judgmental character, especially where her mother was concerned. She would have stoned people in biblical times. The mayor of News Bruinswick is portrayed as a entitled sexual predator, who will to do anything to get re-elected.

Fourth, Ward writes every person of wealth as a racist, Trump supporter or a psycho. Yes, I get that the book is set in Massachusetts, but stereotyping is ramped in the book. If it’s cliche Ward has it in this book. I don’t appreciate stereotyping of any class, race or religion. Ward should have written characters, not caricature.

Fifth, Ward introduces an HIV and suicidal storyline and then proceeds to drop it, like a hot potato. This gave me whiplash.

Sixth, Ward’s rich villain psycho’s conversation with Anne is too off the rails for reality.

Seventh, Ward left too many loose ends dangling at the end of the story.

Eighth, Ward introduced 499 firehouse characters extremely late in the book. They just pop out of the ether.

Ninth, Danny’s brother turns into a twin very late in the book. His brother’s backstory is never truly addressed.

Tenth, the Fire Chief Tom disparage volunteer firefighters, as not being as good as ‘real’ firefighters. Which I take umbrage with, as without volunteer firefighters who have literally no resources and don’t get paid rural America would have no fire protection. Ward thanks real life firefighters in this book, who would tell you the same thing as I just did.

In the last several years I have noticed Ward not living up to the standards of writing she set for us as readers. Her books have been filled with continuity errors and plot holes large enough to drive a semi trucks through. I need Ward challenged, to bring herself to write to her previous high standards. I felt as if the ‘Empress has no clothes’ and no one is brave enough to tell her. Yes I know this book will sell millions, but this Black Dagger Brotherhood knock -off is by far of the worse books I’ve read this year, as it is by a seasoned author who doesn’t get a pass.

Ok, I feel that Ward has done an excellent job with building up a believable plot and sub plot, the action of murders and arson and then the romance plot which seems, at first, to deflect a HEA. I started out reading this because I read all of her books, but didn’t think I would enjoy it completely as I much prefer the supernatural of the BDB. I, for myself, still feel this way. Contemporary romances are not what I would choose over the sci-fi or fantasy genres. However, as with the Bourbon Kings, once I start reading, I cannot help but get caught up in Ward’s langauge and plot skills. A group of firefighters, both men and women, their friends, their families, both by blood and by choice, create settings which give plenty of drama, romance and suspense. I even “knew” who the final perp was, - until I was very close, but, surprise, no cigar. The romance was intense, and surprisingly violent in a spot. One of the most dire romantic episodes I’ve seen in a romance novel gave the story an added dramatic boost. Having said all this, I have to still prefer the vampires of the BDB. But, I’ll want to see how the lives and loves of this close-knit group continue to unfold and I’ll continue to buy and read anything Ward writes. I’d give this 4.5 stars if I knew how. Still, after all I’ve said, this book is well worth buying and reading. (But I still want more of the BDB.)
The opening chapters of Consumed had me hooked. The book opens right in the thick of things with a fire, danger, and life-altering decisions. I was all set to settle in and be thoroughly engrossed in the story, and I was for a while. However, by about half way through, it felt like the story was rambling, and I was wondering where it was going. I was actually pretty tempted to start skimming, but past experience with this author made me stick with it. The story does have some terrific characters and there are some edge of your seat scenes as this group of firefighters work to save lives, but Anne's chase of a deadly killer that is promised in the blurb kind of stuttered to a start with trickles of info here and there. Once Anne becomes a target, the story had the potential to ramp up with some truly creepy stalker-type things happening, but even that was a bit disappointing. The romance between Anne and Danny kind of felt the same way. They can't keep their hands off each other one minute, then they aren't even speaking the next. I expected some angst in the romance, but Anne's hot and cold wore thin. I finally did make it to the conclusion, but it felt like everything came together in a rush. In the end, there were things I liked and things I didn't, leaving me in the middle of the road on this one. I did like several of the characters, so I'm undecided on whether or not I'll continue with this series.
I made it 80% of the way through the version. Which was hard as my device was having issues with the version.

But my one star is for a story she has told. Danny is Rhage. Vic (another firefighter) is Vishous.

Its BDB. Just a different setting.

Oh and in 80% she didn't even scratch at the surface of the mysterious arsonist.

I returned it because of formatting and the fact I couldn't get through it.
